WGU to Offer Additional Economic Turnaround Scholarships

WGU on July 28, 2009

Western Governors University announced that it has increased the number of economic turnaround scholarships available to displaced workers from 100 to 150. The increase is in response to the large number of applications received, more than 230, since the program’s launch in May. Created to help workers who have lost their jobs in the past year go back to college, the scholarship offers up to $1,250 per six-month term for up to four terms, up to a total of $5,000.

The scholarships may be used toward bachelor’s or master’s degrees in any of WGU’s four colleges: Business, Education, Information Technology, and Health Professions.  Scholarship applicants must be able to complete an online degree program in two years or less and currently have an associate’s or bachelor’s degree.

Western Governors University has increased the scholarship amount and number of eligible terms for its Economic Turnaround Scholarship. Under the new provisions, scholarship recipients will be eligible to receive up to $1,500 per term for as many as five terms, up to a total of $7,500. The expansion of this scholarship program is aimed at making it easier for unemployed adult learners to retool for success in today’s job market by earning a bachelor’s or master’s degree.

More than 100 scholarships are available through this program, which was launched early last month. To date, more than 65 applications have been received, and the application deadline is June 30, 2009.
