First impressions with your co-workers can last forever, too!
Try to relax and be yourself!

On the dress code thing - you may get an idea about what's kosher during the interview. For example, I've kept up military indoctrination when it comes to appearance more out of habit than anything else. Until recently I wasn't even consciously aware of it until some students on campus mistook me for 'administration' - I guess the dress white shirt and tie threw them; I'm sure it had nothing to do with age since I just hit the big '6-0' last month, and age discrimination is strictly verboten.

Actually, the hardest thing is avoiding being roped into office politics, rivalries, and cliques before you get your bearings and can decide for yourself.

And definitely take a nice chunk out of your first paycheck to celebrate! You've earned it; you deserve it! THEN you can deal with paying off student loans, etc.

Unless they are donations, college textbooks are a luxury few public libraries can afford. Most college students are financially hard pressed and stretching their budgets to the max, so being that egalitarian isn't practical.

Fortunately, there is a completely different mindset intimately associated with the Internet and the various 'free' and 'open' movements, and there is no question that collaboration changes everything, so in another 5-10 years many of these problems will fade into ancient history. Meanwhile, you can find a lot of very useful learning resources from textbook publishers online, and many others from the OpenCourseWare sites.

A major problem for online students in Mexico is precisely books. Most of the public libraries are completely useless when it comes for higher education material, And purchasing a book is sadly way out of reach of most budgets. I am currently studying a bachelor's degree in English Education at Universidad Davinci online ( it's a Mexican institution). In my case i'm fortunate enough to live near the border from Texas, so I can cross over to look in places like Barnes and Noble and Hastings. An online shopping is a difficult option for mexican students because of billing and shipping policies and costs. That is, of course, if it's not lost in the Mexican postal service.

You watch and you listen. You make predictions about what you think will work and then get feedback from those that have tried it.Don't be surprised to find that you might even offer suggestions that they might not have thought about. As you read their postings, I am sure that you have had several of those "Aha" kind of moments. Use that in your discussions.I know that you sometimes feel that you are always one step behind everyone else, but just keep in mind it is not a race. You are all working towards the same goal and I think that you will find that the others in your class or program are more than willing to share their experiences with you.Good luck with your program and don't hesitate to come back here and ask questions.
